It is Our Pleasure to Highlight Students and Share Their Victories

George

It is my pleasure to highlight George, a friendly and fun gentleman who always finds a way to make everyone laugh!

-What made you look for yoga?

“The high cost of chiropractic care and the resulting outcome after many years of care was not relieving much pain. Even with regular attendance to chiropractic sessions, it did not provide long term relief of my left side sciatica.

It would seem to get better for a while and even the chiropractor said that I would only have 8 days before the pain came back. Putting my left ankle up on my right knee used to cause tingling and pain.”

-What do you love most about practicing yoga?

“Of course the relief of the sciatic pain, and there’s something about it that’s very calming – it’s is an unforeseen byproduct. I think the calming comes from releasing tension and that tight muscular systems carry the stress and that somehow the relief of a tight body is calming.”

-Do you have any goals for your yoga practice?

“My short term goal is to master level 1, mid term goal is to be able to reach my ankles without a strap [in a hamstring stretch] and long term goal is to be able to do yoga that’s not for people with specific injuries.”

-What advice would you give someone who is thinking about trying yoga?

“Try it twice a week for 30 days before you make a decision. After a month, I started to really feel a difference.”

Thanks again George for coming in and sharing your story – I’ll never forget when you said that you didn’t have to take Advil anymore. That’s a huge victory and it’s only just the beginning. I look forward to watching you gain even more strength, flexibility and be amazed at what your body will do. It is a pleasure and a privilege to have you be a part of our community at Balanced Yoga. I look forward to celebrating all the small and big victories together as you progress along your yoga journey!

This is the one place I get to come and take care of this temple because I want to travel with my husband to all the National Parks and enjoy life in my old age.”

-What do you love most about practicing yoga?

“I go home very rested, very tired and very happy. I enjoy showing what I can do to my husband and kids. After the first class, I went home and knew that this was it!”

-Do you have any goals for your yoga practice?

“My goal is to feel more flowy and not choppy and get better core strength so that I can keep my good posture and not walk like an old lady.”

-What advice would you give someone who is thinking about trying yoga?

-What made you look for yoga?

“I was looking for something – an exercise that didn’t hurt and that I could feel was working and made me want to come back, and got lucky with my friend Michelle telling me about Balanced Yoga.”

-What do you love most about practicing yoga?

“Right now, after every single workout, I feel that I am exercising muscles and making progress, even if it’s small progress. I also love that I’ve been able to get John [husband] into yoga as well. In particular, what I’ve appreciated about here and you is the attention, the positive feedback and the ability to make things accessible so that I can at least do some of every move. You’ve taken the anxiety out of it by just teaching without any negativity and being positive.”

Lyubov

It is my pleasure to highlight – Lyubov, a strong 74 year old grandmother of 8 who lives life to the fullest and doesn’t back down from a challenge!

-What made you look for yoga?

“A couple of years ago, I had a myocardial infarction and heart surgery. Before that, I was always active and enjoyed dancing. After surgery, the doctor told me that I needed slower and lower impact exercises and walking 5 miles per day. In addition to this, I also knew that I needed the strength to build up core strength to support my pelvic floor organs the pelvic floor organs and couldn’t do anything that involved jumping.

I was also struggling with mid back pain. My daughter showed me a few exercises to do at home but it  wasn’t easy for me to be consistent.

I used to have a misconception about yoga – I thought it was just meditation, but my daughter recommended it so we decided to find a place and just try it out.”

-What do you love most about practicing yoga?

“I walk here and enjoy it that class starts at either stretching or massaging. At the beginning, it was painful, but I like it that I am able to do all of the exercises but still get a nice challenge. Since I am either lying down or sitting, it didn’t put any extra pressure on my pelvic floor.

I have also enjoyed a lot of benefits from practicing yoga:

-I used to have back pain almost every day and now it’s just occasionally and the pain is always gone after class.

-I used to have joint problems and pain and swelling in my wrists, and now I don’t have that anymore.  I don’t have any pain in my pelvic floor anymore. I feel that it lifts my spirits and helps me with headaches.

-I have noticed that I am a lot more flexible than before.

-I feel that I found myself through yoga and I’m able to do all kinds of things I wasn’t capable of before.”

-Do you have any goals for your yoga practice?

“I want to get in better shape and be healthy.”

-What advice would you give someone who is thinking about trying yoga?

“Don’t stay home – go to the studio. It’s very important. If I was just doing classes at home, I would miss a lot of them. I’ve never regretted or doubted coming here. Coming every other day helps me stay on track.”

Erin

-What made you look for yoga?

“I have always been looking for a good yoga studio because of the back pain that I have lived with for half my life – I knew that yoga could alleviate my pain. I had a hard time until I found this studio that focused on being kind to my back and supporting accessory muscles for strength. I always knew that when I found the right place it’d be good for my back.”

-What do you enjoy most about practicing yoga?

“I enjoy pain relief. I enjoy that it’s a place for mindfulness on my days off and enjoyed seeing the progress in my strength and flexibility since I’ve been coming. I look forward to seeing where I am a year from now. I also enjoy that this is something I can do with my mom.”

-Do you have any goals for your yoga practice?

“I want more hamstring mobility, and to be able to lift my leg up more. My biggest goal is to always make the time for yoga because it is easy to let other things get in the way.”

-What advice would you give someone who is thinking about trying yoga?

“Come here and keep showing up. Trust your body and trust yourself. It’s good for you.”
